Join us for this revised Complementary and Alternative Medicine in Cancer Care (CAM) course, which provides you an evidence-informed entry into complex conversations with patients, families, caregivers and interprofessional healthcare teams. Increasing public awareness, internet access to potentially dubious or misunderstood sources and social media about general wellness has been accompanied by a great increase in the use of unconventional therapies. This online course is designed to provide you with general reliable information about CAM and to provide links to current research in this field. Topics include a review of different types of CAM, Canadian regulations for CAM usage, potential supportive uses and contraindications with standard cancer therapies, and the concept of "integrative cancer care". Upon completion of this course, the learner will more confidently be able to objectively discuss CAM with patients, and responsibly communicate with interested patients about more reliable CAM resources.
Learning Objectives:
• Define the terms complementary and alternative medicine, and discuss their potential roles in cancer care
• Understand the role of integrated medicine in the overall care of cancer patients
• Describe the different types of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) available to cancer patients
• Understand Canadian legislation and regulations governing CAM usage and CAM practitioners
• Recognize potential contraindications for CAM with standard cancer treatments
• Critically review published literature on complementary and alternative treatments
• Recognize which CAM resources have been identified by trustworthy content reviewers as appropriate to recommend to others looking for more information, where appropriate
• Discuss evidence for/against the use of CAM in cancer care, referring wherever medically appropriate
